Season Review
Jon Pertwee's second season introduces Jo Grant as The Doctor's new assistant and she is an instant hit. Outgoing assistant, Liz Shaw, is not seen at all but given just a one line write out. The second introduction this season is Roger Delgardo's The Master. Unusually, The Master appears in all five serials! The UNIT team are also back for their second season as well.
This is a strong season and the actors give you a sense of family and camaraderie with UNIT. The story telling is great with perhaps only Colony In Space sagging a bit. Six episodes for this story is one or two too many as there's not enough story to go round. It's a bit talky too, but actually I like it for that. In terms of episodes per serial, the other six parter this season is The Mind of Evil which is better paced so doen't drag as much. Unusually, The Daemons is five episodes long with the remaining two stories four episodes each.
Returning from the Season 7 opener are The Autons who are again the season openers, this time in Terror of the Autons.
Perhaps Season 8 gets predictable towards the end as you always know that The Master is going to be behind everything going on. But that's also part of the charm...
Doctor Who feels very much comfortable and at home this year which gives us great performances coupled with many classic stories.
The Collection Review
The Collection Box Set Releases: Season 8 is the eighth boxset to be released, containing 8 disks and was released on the 8th of the month!. This is the second Jon Pertwee season to be released after Season 10.
The boxset contains 8 disks with 5 serials and one bonus disk. Colony in Space and The Daemons both have two disks.
The cover of the boxset has Jon Pertwee in purple cape holding the Tardis dematerialisation circuit. Jon looks great here. The background is taken from The Claws of Axos.
Inner Booklet Cover Holder: From Colony In Space.
Booklet Cover: From Terror of The Autons.
Console Room: Season 8 Console Room
Blu-ray Disk Narration: Katy Manning who debuts this season as Jo Grant, does the narration.
The picture of spine of the boxset is usually just a clean shot of the Doctor, but in this case the the front shot has been used. You therefore see a rather comical shot of the head of the Doctor with a little head of the Master popping up at the bottom of the image. Seasons 12 and 23 also use the cover shot on the spine.
