Attack of The Cybermen

Season 22

Serial 1

No. Episodes: 2

Review

Attack of the Cybermen is the Season 22 opener and if you like seeing having their heads and arms chopped off or exploding in a variety of ways, this one is for you! I may do a body count totaliser for this season...

In a change to the usual format of episodes being 25 mins, each episode is now 45 minutes. This actually  makes most stories in this season drag in places. Often you can also see the 'join' of where the 25 minutes episode would have ended if the old format had been retained.

The story is a second launch of Colin Baker's Doctor after his introduction in the last story of Season 21, The Twin Dilema. The Season 22 opener tries quite successfully to tie together all the various contradictory Cybermen storylines from the past and does so in a convincing way.

The story also uses a lot of elements from 'Resurrection of the Daleks' such as Lyton, the two evil policemen and even some of the music cues. Again, these elements work well in the story.

Lyton's redemption is a nice surprise, but The Doctor using a weapon is an unpleasant one. The story too get's so mired in violence that you also tend to forget what the whole point of it is...

Some of the highlights of the Special Features...

5.1 Surround Sound features on this story - Highly recommended!

Making of Documentary: Contributors to the making of this serial plus it's controversy are discussed in this bonus content. What I find amazing is that Eric Saward seems to be completely at a loss as to why there was so much fuss over the violence in this story. This documentary was probably released with the DVD  of this story as it dates from about the late 2000's.

Behind The Sofa: We kick off with three teams for this season's Behind the Sofa with Wendy Padbury featuring, who appeared in the Cybermen's first story 'The Tenth Planet' which was also William Hartnell's last. Terry Molloy appears too as he featured in this story and will again at the end of the season as Davros!  There's also three Doctors - Davison, McCoy and Baker as well as companions Bryant, Fielding and Sutton rounding the cast out.

In Conversation: Although I am not a fan of the Colin Baker era, this 'In Conversation' piece with Matthew Sweet is really lovely and shows a lovely side to Colin and is well worth a watch!

The Cyber Story: A fascinating look back at the origins of this villain and the changes the Cybermen have undergone over the years. Again, this looks like it comes from the DVD release extras.
