Review
Oh... So I do have to review this... really?
This is grim... Sylvester McCoy debuts as the seventh Doctor in a serial that is the nadir of Who... As Colin Baker had been booted from the show he did not want to come back for a regeneration scene. Quite right too. So what do we get instead? Sylvester McCoy in a really bad wig. The Collection box set here offers you the option to watch the first episode with updated effects for the regeneration which does help. A. Little. Bit. Once the regeneration is complete, Kate O'Mara manages just to waltz in to the Tardis and says ' Leave the girl, it's the man I want!' to which everyone just bursts out laughing. It may be fun for the actors to do this, but for the audience... shhheeesh! And it's completely downhill from there...
The terrifying Tetraps are not terrifying just stupid. And the tonging is just laughable and gross at the same time.
The slapstick acting is terrible from McCoy.
Peter Tuddenham (Zen and Orac from Blakes 7) does special voices!
The acting from almost everyone else is just wooden and the music is too bombastic and you notice is above the vocals and that's never a good thing. Music should always support what's going on, rather than trying to be the star of the whole thing.
So, another regeneration story that is a complet dud. It's just zero points again... But the season does get better, well a little...
Episode Lowlights
The regeneration sequence is dire... the updated effects help a bit but cannot mask the awfulness of it...
The Brain! A truly terrible prop, it's just awful.
The Delusional Doctor... It's not a good first outing for Sylvester pratt falling everywhere and with all getting all of the common expressions wrong all of the time gets wearing after about one minute...
Poor Bonnie... I never liked her back in the day, but now I have to revise that opinion. She can act. It's a bit theatre but she has the chops. This series make her just the No1 Screamer... it's a travesty really...
Hammy Kate... Oh luvvies! I can just camp it up to 10 and it's marvellous! Sorry Kate you can't and you should know better. It's wince inducing to watch a good actress do this...
Pip and Jane Baker... their second script for Who makes The Mark of The Rani look like Shakespeare. As the saying goes... 'you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig...
