The Leisure Hive

Season 18

Serial 1

Review

Season 18 kicks off with a new title sequence and new title music  When it first aired, this was revolutionary and controversial. I remember seeing it and thinking the titles were very derivative of Star Trek The Motion Picture and Star Wars, both which were released in the previous year. Now, on reflection, I love the titles and new theme arrangement.

The new title sequence heralded a new era, a new decade, and a new direction. A new producer was in place (Jon Nathan-Turner) and the whole production feels different to the previous season. Also, this season is one where the whole of the Tardis crew changes by the end of the season.

The Leisure Hive is a the start of the new direction and it really feels like a soft reboot. The story seems more serious and sci-fi in tone and the Argolans are well realised aliens.
